SEPTEMBER 18TH -- 100 YEARS AGO

Ironically, today, September 18, 2018 we have clear skies in Seward. The exceptionally warm weather is gone, but the clouds have left us and the sun has returned. That wasn’t the case 100 years ago today.

I’m reposting my entry from ten days back because it covers today 100 years ago – Sept. 18, 1918 – the day Kent and Rockie venture to Seward. They had been on Fox Island since August 28th, and it had been raining and storming since then. Kent was busy fixing up his cabin, clearing the land around it, and gathering a supply of firewood. Rockie helped as he could, but spent most of his time wandering the beach and the woods and helping Olson with the fox and goats. Kent had written many letters but received few. Since Sept. 14 they  had been watching for steamers arriving in Seward hoping to pick up and send  out some mail.

His first book published in 1920 -- Wilderness: A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska – was followed in 1924 with Voyaging Southward from the Strait of Magellan . These two books along with his art established Kent as the adventurous and masculine artist-writer – an image he encouraged and that contributed to his appeal to women. LINKS TO SPECIFIC CHAPTERS IN THIS BOOK On August 28, 2020 I presented a lecture in Seward focused on the 100th anniversary of the publication of Rockwell Kent's Wilderness: A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska , and the exhibit of the Alaska paintings. These events took place in March 1920. During the lecture I skimmed through much background information contained in the chapters below. The links below take you in order to the entries about the topics listed.  Kent arrived in Seward with his 8-year-old son, Rockie, on Aug. 24, 1918. The next day they discovered Fox Island, met Lars Matt Olson the old fox farmer and rancher there, and decided to settle at that spot. On Aug. 26-27 they stayed in Seward making preparations to settle on the island. On Aug. 28, they moved to Fox Island. The two adventurers made a few more quick trips back and forth during the next few days to get settled, but Kent marked Aug. 28 as the day he began his Alaska adventure on Fox Island.
