LINKS TO SPECIFIC CHAPTERS IN THIS BOOK
On August 28, 2020 I presented a lecture in Seward focused on the 100th anniversary of the publication of Rockwell Kent's Wilderness: A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska, and the exhibit of the Alaska paintings. These events took place in March 1920. During the lecture I skimmed through much background information contained in the chapters below. The links below take you in order to the entries about the topics listed.
Kent arrived in Seward with his 8-year-old son, Rockie, on Aug. 24, 1918. The next day they discovered Fox Island, met Lars Matt Olson the old fox farmer and rancher there, and decided to settle at that spot. On Aug. 26-27 they stayed in Seward making preparations to settle on the island. On Aug. 28, they moved to Fox Island. The two adventurers made a few more quick trips back and forth during the next few days to get settled, but Kent marked Aug. 28 as the day he began his Alaska adventure on Fox Island.
I will continue adding chapters to this post so it will become a Table of Contents allowing easier access to the book -- which is still a draft needing much work.

ROCKWELL KENT HELPS A FELLOW ARTIST
VICTORIA HUTSON HUNTLEY
NOTE -- Just before this entry on the website, I did a two-part series about the Huntley and Kent relationship, but I strayed into several rabbit holes. The digressions may be of interest to some, but I decided to redo the series as one less scattered entry -- and that link is below. Not long after I wrote this chapter about Huntley, I found that the Georgia Museum of Art (Univ. of Georgia) published a special edition of their Bulletin (Volume 26 -- 2020) about Victoria Hutson Huntley. I read through it and found only one or two brief mentions of Rockwell Kent -- nothing about the relationship in the chapter below. I contacted them and sent them a copy of my entries. They were quite interested. Perhaps in a future issue they will tell this story. I mention this to demonstrate how Rockwell Kent is often left out of the history of American art -- not on purpose I must say or out of any negative agenda. He has been so marginalized in art history that few scholars realize the value of his contribution. I did this chapter especially to show that Kent could be extremely generous and kind to fellow artists who were struggling as he had struggled for most of his early career -- and this at a time during the 1920s and later the Depression years when he was extremely busy and had to work double-time earn a living. For more details about Huntley's life not contained in my chapter, I refer you to the Georgia Museum of Art Bulletin mentioned above.

THE LIFE OF LARS MATT OLSON (1848-1922)
I did this presentation for the Resurrection Bay Historical Society (Seward, Alaska) on April 8, 2021. It was based upon all my research in the chapters listed below this image.

I stumbled onto your site while seeking info from on some of Kent’s fabric designs for Bloomcraft which they sold in 1950. Glad I did! Didn’t find what I was looking for but have enjoyed what I’ve read so far and bookmarking for when I have more time.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the site. I'm working on a Table of Contents to make the site easier to navigate.
