UPCOMING NOV. 9 KENT SYMPOSIUM AT THE ANCHORAGE MUSEUM
I'll be speaking on Nov. 9th at the Anchorage Museum along with three other Rockwell Kent experts. My topic will be what I call the "Not-So-Quiet-Adventure" that Kent had while on Fox Island. Beneath the inspirational text of his book, Wilderness: A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska," there lurks in his letters to his wife, Kathleen, and to his amour, Hildegarde Hirsch -- his uncertainty, depression, and loneliness. There is tremendous contrast between the uplifting, redemptive story he tells in his book and the torment and inner turmoil brought to him by his demons. As we look back on Kent's rapid rise to fame during the 1920's, we must realize that while on Fox Island during 1918-19 he had no idea where is life was going, no assurance of his marriage, his love affair or his art career.
